Young Women’s Program

(under development)

In Mexico, low-income and rural young people face significant barriers to higher education. This is even more the case with young women, who grow up in a culture which substantially undervalues education for women.

The Oaxaca Learning Center is currently seeking funding for a program specifically targeted to the needs of young women students, and is working with other resource providers, such as the Casa de la Mujer, to design an effective program. This also is envisioned as a work/study program. Its goals are to provide participants with the self-confidence, skills, experience and support needed to realize their career potential.

Of special concern to Jaasiel, the Center coordinator, is the steady improvement of the Center’s services, in particular making the tutoring as focused and as useful as possible. That priority goes hand in hand with his personal commitment to bring more students into the program.

“The two hardest populations for us to reach are girl students and indigenous students coming into the city from distant villages. Neither group is used to having free services targeted for them. The challenge is to reach out to them and bring them in.”
