Work and Study Program

In addition to the stipends to tutors, the Oaxaca Learning Center provides financial support, in the form of a work/study program, to needy and deserving students who have participated in Learning Center programs in a consistent manner.

For the selected high school students, their stipend is based on spending 15 hours weekly at the Center in supervised study. This is a way for promising, but poorly prepared, students to devote more time to their studies instead of having to work long hours to support themselves. In addition, they have the opportunity to broaden their academic skills, read books and give book reports, make presentations, and learn to work and solve problems in a group setting.

One older woman high school student and two university students are currently receiving stipends under the work/study program. The university students’ work entails providing tutoring assistance at the Center on a weekly basis.

Study Skills / Counseling

The Center’s tutors, along with Gary Titus, the Learning Center’s founder, provide career counseling support for students on an informal, as-needed basis, along with help in developing the study skills necessary to perform successfully at the high school and university level.

“The Learning Center is an organization of support to the community, where they affirm and show us new things. For me the Center has been of a lot of help, thanks to their assistance, I have begun to understand chemistry better than I did before, as well as math.”
- Juan David García Sánchez

"The Learning Center is a very useful place for the students since they tutor us on some topics that are difficult."
- Martínez González Elizabeth
